Resource Guides, Newsletters, and Videos Media

Veterans compose 7% of the general population, but only 1 - 2% of newsrooms. Information can become misconstrued when those who haven't served report on military and veteran issues, especially when the report concerns veteran mental health and suicide. Veterans in NYC wishing to request information for a story or whitepaper can file an Article 6 of the New York State Public Officers Law is known as the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL). This law allows members of the public to request records from New York State or local government agencies.

The Forgotten Veteran Newsletter

In 2018 Veterans Justice Project founder Timothy Pena was sentenced to two years in Arizona Dept. of Corrections for possession of a small amount of marijuana. Upon arrival to the prison yard, he soon realized the veterans only had limited access to the Veterans Affairs, so created a Veterans Support Group with the intention of bringing veterans together as a group, while also providing access to the VA, transitional services, and resources.

After release in 2019, Tim started Veterans Justice Project andThe Forgotten Veteran newsletter to keep veterans engaged in the veteran community and to provide access to Veterans Affairs, veteran-supportive agencies, and resources.

The Forgotten Veteran Resource Guide

It is hard to imagine all the moving parts to transitioning from one place to another (a new city), one situation to another (divorce), or from one completely different life to another (transition from the military or prison to civilian world).

Unlike other guides, the Veterans Resource Guide is specifically targeted to the veteran transitioning from one life situation to another especially those transitioning from prison or homelessness and back into the community. But, like other guides, this resource guide covers both VA and non-VA sections. Please feel free to offer comments, suggestions, or ask questions.
